Part VIII: The Enemies of Ikhlaq – Traits to Purify
The path of Ikhlaq requires not only cultivating virtues but also purging vices. The Prophet (S.A.W.W) and the Ahlulbayt (A.S) identified key spiritual diseases that destroy character.
1. Arrogance (Kibr)
Arrogance is considered the root of all evil. The Prophet (S.A.W.W) said:
"لَا يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ مَنْ كَانَ فِي قَلْبِهِ مِثْقَالُ ذَرَّةٍ مِنْ كِبْرٍ"
“No one who has an atom’s weight of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise.” (Sahih Muslim).
Arrogance is rejecting the truth and looking down on people. It was the sin of Iblis (Satan).
2. Envy (Hasad)
Envy is a destructive trait that eats away at good deeds. Imam Ali (A.S) said: “Envy is the ugliest trait.” The Prophet (S.A.W.W) warned that envy consumes good deeds like fire consumes wood.
3. Backbiting (Ghibah)
Backbiting—speaking about someone in their absence in a way they would dislike—is equated in the Quran to eating the flesh of one’s dead brother (49:12). The Prophet (S.A.W.W) defined it clearly and stated that its expiation is to seek forgiveness from the person who was wronged.
4. Suspicion (Su’ al-Dhann)
Imam Ali (A.S) advised: “Put your brother’s words on the best interpretation until you can no longer do so.” The Quran commands believers to avoid most suspicion, as some suspicion is a sin.
